In front of a record crowd at the Sydney Football Stadium, 43,967 fans witnessed Australia take on Diego Maradona's Argentina for a place in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. It was Maradona's first match with the Albicelestes since losing 1-0 to West Germany in the 1990 World Cup final. His country needed him and he had a lot to prove after years of drug-fuelled turmoil.

Australian goalkeeper, Mark Bosnich, was back. Ned Zelic was in. Australia's captain, Paul Wade, was ready. Wade man-marked Maradona in a performance for the ages. However, Maradona managed to get away just once, resulting in a cross from the corner that found the head of striker Abel Balbo. One-nil.

Australia responded quickly. Cheered on by the home crowd, Aurelio Vidmar got on the end of a cross from brother, Tony, to level the score. One-all. The SFS did not have a roof but if it did, it would have blown off.

A draw was an outstanding result for Australia in the first-leg against one of world football's heavyweights. Bosnich and Zelic were injured for the return leg. Australia would go out by a freakishly unlucky looping own-goal by Alex Tobin. The rest is history.

This design celebrates arguably the greatest footballer of all-time to grace the shores of Sydney.
