Before the start of the 1971 NSW First Division season, St George Budapest, captained by Johnny Warren was invited to compete in a four-team tournament in Japan. It was a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties between Australian and Japanese football.
The opposition included the Japan National Team (reigning Olympic bronze medal winner), a Japan B-side and Danish leading first division team Frem (fielding Danish internationals).
St George finished top of the table, lifting the trophy. Johnny Warren was voted best player but gave his medal to up-and-comer George Harris to encourage him along.
The victory was a milestone for Australian football because it was the first time an Australian club had won an international tournament. This St George team had 10 players participating in Australia's qualification campaign for the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
This design was drawn by artist, Jamie Osborne, from an original tournament photograph.
